Punjab has been one of the most prosperous states in India since independence the way of green & white revolution, however , this achievement was washed over due to insufficient growth of my industry in Punjab. Initially, certain industrial segment started well, but due to the lack of sufficient and affordable technical manpower & absence of innovative up gradation in technologies, the industries of the states like Maharashtra Karnataka & Andra Pradesh.
To address this issue of technical Manpower shortage and to usher into a new era of Industrial Development comparable to international Standards, the Punjab Government constituted Punjab Technical University (PTU) in 1997 by act of state Legislative. The University was entrusted with the responsibility of developing the new generation of technical manpower that can spearhead the industrial development of state. Punjab Technical University has been formed to be the grooming ground for the future engineers, Managers and Researchers.
As of today, PTU affiliates more than 250 Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Architecture Colleges in the state that approved by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
PTU understands that restricting technical education to its campuses only will not serve its objective of creating a knowledge rich society. It has firmly understood that latest technical education has been spread to the gernal masses. This is how the Distance Education Programme (DPE) of the Punjab Technical University was conceived.
This objective of the programme is to impart affordable, relevant, skill-based & remunerative Technical Education to the masses of country.
Today, the University has more than 1600 Learning Centres spreads across the country offering the quality technical education in the fields of information Technology, Management, Paramedical Technology, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management & Tourism, Media and Mass communication & journalism etc.
Salient Features
UGC Nomenclature
All courses offered by PTU are as per the nomenclature and guidelines of university Grants Commision that makes these courses universally acceptable.
DEC Approval
All courses offered by PTU under this program have been approved by DEC, Distance Education Council, IGNOU, New Delhi and the joint Committee of "AICTE-UGC-DEC" DEC has categorically appreciated the initiative taken by PTU in contributing to the 11th plan by way of increasing the enrollment ratio through distance education.
Syllabi
PTU revise its curriculum periodically as per the industry requirements and offers latest subjects and technologies empowering the students to get a degree and the skills to be employable.
Multi Entry & Multi Exit System
PTU offers a unique Multi Entery & Multi Exit System called the pyramid structure of course. Under the system, 10+2 students, after undergoing 2 semesters of U.G. programme, can enter same system after some time from where he/she had left. Such admissions are termed as Lateral Entries. The same mechanism work for post-graduate courses.
Examination System
The examination patter ensure that the understanding and knowledge of the candidate is extensively tested through semester based subject type theory examinations. More than 400 examination centres are established at reputed institution allover India to conduct these exams. Practical examinations are also conducted to benchmark the applicability of the subject understanding of the student.
Internal Test & Self Assessment
The Learning Centres assess the students periodically through group discussion, project and internal tests. These internal tests contribute 25% as internal assessment in each semester where as external examination conducted by the University contributes 75%.
Proximity
So as meet the basic objective of distance learning, PTU has established a network of more then 1600 Learning Centers across country, so as to reach every nook of corner of the country and provide the students with a second chance of learning. PTU has established the centers in all most all sates and even at the most remote locations like Kargil & Imphal.
Study Hours
The curriculum and the calendar provides minimum 240 hours of education delivery in each semester to all students. This is apart from the tests, assignments, self learning exercises, projects, industrial training etc. This is normally taken 2 hours per day or consolidate at the weekends. Daily interaction with the faculty enhances the understanding of the subject.
Class Rooms
PTU establishes Learning centers with adequate class rooms are required amenities for teaching and learning. It almost replaces the regular mode of education where students can take care of lecture and interact with and fellow students. Modern teaching aids like television, overhead Projector, LCD projector, white boards etc are extensively used for the delivery of education.
Faculty
PTU has set norms for the minimum qualification of the faculty who conduct classes at the learning centers. To keep the facilities update with the last technologies, the faculty development programmes are periodically organized at regional levels.
Laboratories
Learning centers are equipped with the lab facilities including computers, high speed internet connectivity, medical equipment & chemicals, designing labs, drafting tables, sewing machines, training kitchens, training restaurant etc. as per the course requirement. Many LCs also have industry tie ups with hotels & restaurants, hospitals and clinic and other such establishment to give hands-on industry exposure.
Library
The learning centers have well-stocked library having reference books, magazines and journals, newsletters etc. for future reading subject.
Course Material
To make learning easier effective and interesting, PTU has started providing most of its course material in the SIM (Self Industrial Material) format. SIM are closer to reference material than learning texts. They are the instruments of learning which present information in detailed form and facilitate independent learning center provide notes to the students.
Learning Aids
To supplement the class room teaching and self instruction materials, PTU has developed its Computer based tutorials. These materials are prepared by experts of respective fields and help the students to learn the subject at his own pace / convenience.
Communication & Soft Skills
Irrespective of the course chosen, the student takes up the subject of communication and soft skills that commutative English, presentation skills etc. enabling the students to present herself/himself in a better position in front of the prospective employer.
EDP Center
To handle the large database of its distance education students, the University has set up an exclusive Electronic Data Processing Section that has enhanced the result declaration process, enabling students to have sufficient time for preparation of the subsequent examination.
Multi-Tasking Opportunity
As the programme requires only 2 hours of study everyday, it empowers the students for multi-tasking like employment, entrepreneurship, family business, housekeeping or continuing a dual degree programme. This saves a lot of precious time and money.
Fee Waiver
Up to 100% fee waiver is offered to Physically Challenged students with an aim to integrate them in to the knowledge society.
Degree Equivalence
PTU Distance Education Programme is widely accepted nationally and internationally. Lately, the M.Sc IT degree has been rated equivalent to the Master Degree in United Kingdom. The Diploma and Degree programme has also been accredited by International University Accrediting Association, California, USA.
